Almira M. Khan | According To Sykes

Clinical Social Work/ Therapist AM, LSW (She/Her/Hers)

I believe everybody deserves a space to feel safe, seen, heard, and respected.

Therapy can offer that space. A place where difficult emotions, life experiences, and personal challenges can be explored with compassion, curiosity, and without judgment. My goal is to create an environment where clients feel supported in understanding themselves more deeply and strengthening the relationships that matter most to them.

I work collaboratively with teens, adults, and couples navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, identity exploration, relationship challenges, and the lasting impacts of trauma. Together, we explore patterns, experiences, and beliefs that may no longer serve you while building on the strengths, resilience, and wisdom you already possess.

My Approach

My work is grounded in a trauma-informed and decolonizing framework that recognizes both the personal and systemic experiences that shape our lives. I believe healing involves more than managing symptoms. It also involves understanding the stories we carry, the environments that have shaped us, and the possibilities that emerge when we reconnect with our values and authentic selves.

Drawing from Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing, Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed practices, mindfulness, and family systems theory, I tailor therapy to each individual’s unique experiences, goals, and needs.

I am particularly interested in helping clients understand intergenerational patterns, strengthen their sense of self, and navigate the complex relationship between their values, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Creating Space for Growth

I strive to create a welcoming, affirming, and culturally responsive environment where clients can bring their full selves into the therapeutic process.

I especially value creating space for individuals from diverse backgrounds and identities, including LGBTQ+ communities, mixed-race individuals, single parents, and those seeking care grounded in respect, authenticity, and emotional safety.

Whether you are processing a major life transition, healing from trauma, exploring identity, or working to improve your relationships, therapy can be a space to pause, reflect, and move toward the life you want to create.

Understanding Yourself and Your Relationships

Our relationships often serve as mirrors, reflecting both our strengths and the places where healing may still be needed.

I have a particular passion for working with individuals and couples who are seeking deeper connection, healthier communication, and greater understanding within their relationships. Whether you are navigating conflict, life transitions, trust concerns, differing expectations, or simply feeling disconnected from one another, therapy can provide a space to slow down and explore what is happening beneath the surface.

My work with couples is informed by the Gottman Method, an evidence-based approach that helps partners strengthen communication, deepen friendship and intimacy, navigate conflict more effectively, and build a stronger foundation for their relationship. Together, we identify patterns that may be creating distance while developing practical tools that support connection, trust, and mutual understanding.

For individual clients, exploring relationship dynamics can also offer valuable insight into family patterns, attachment experiences, personal values, and the ways we show up in connection with others. Through greater understanding, we can begin creating relationships that feel more authentic, fulfilling, and aligned with who we are becoming.

Professional Background

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with minors in Gender & Women’s Studies and Entrepreneurship from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago. I am an Illinois Licensed Social Worker and currently serve as a Violence Recovery Specialist at UChicago Medicine, supporting individuals and families impacted by violence and trauma.

These experiences continue to deepen my understanding of resilience, healing, and the importance of compassionate, client-centered care.

Beginning the Journey

Healing looks different for everyone.

Whether we work together directly or I help connect you with the right fit within our practice, my hope is that you feel cared for, respected, and empowered throughout the process.

You do not have to navigate life’s challenges alone. Support, growth, and healing are possible, and therapy can be one step toward creating the life and relationships you deserve.
