Daunte Henderson: Creating Space to Be Seen, Heard, and Understood

Daunte Henderson, LCSW | According To Sykes

Clinical Social Worker/Therapist MSW, LCSW (He/Him/His)

At According To Sykes, we believe healing begins in relationship.

For Daunte Henderson, LCSW, that relationship starts with something simple but powerful: creating a space where people feel seen, heard, and understood without judgment.

Many people arrive in therapy carrying far more than they allow others to see. Anxiety, grief, trauma, depression, stress, relationship challenges, identity questions, and the pressure of holding everything together can create a profound sense of isolation. Often, people have become so accustomed to caring for others that they have lost sight of where they can go to be honest about what they are carrying themselves.

Daunte believes therapy can be that space.

Why Feeling Heard Matters

As a Black male therapist, Daunte has witnessed firsthand how culture, identity, family systems, and lived experiences shape mental health.

Throughout his work, he has observed how many individuals struggle not only with emotional pain but also with feeling misunderstood, unseen, or disconnected from the language needed to describe what they are experiencing.

His approach is grounded in a simple belief:

People begin to heal when they feel heard.

Therapy offers an opportunity to slow down, make sense of difficult experiences, and reconnect with parts of ourselves that may have been overlooked, silenced, or pushed aside in the process of surviving.

Supporting Growth Through Understanding

Healing is not simply about reducing symptoms.

It is also about understanding the patterns, experiences, relationships, and systems that have shaped us.

Daunte works collaboratively with clients to explore the connections between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, family history, coping strategies, and identity. Through this process, clients often gain greater clarity about themselves while developing new tools for navigating life’s challenges.

His work is rooted in a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and strengths-based perspective that recognizes both the pain people carry and the resilience that has helped them endure.

Rather than focusing solely on what is wrong, Daunte helps clients identify what has helped them survive and how those strengths can support future growth.

Supporting Men, Identity, and Emotional Well-Being

Daunte is particularly passionate about helping individuals navigate the emotional challenges that often go unspoken.

Many people, especially men, have received messages throughout their lives that vulnerability is weakness, emotions should be hidden, or asking for help is a sign of failure. These messages can create significant barriers to healing.

Daunte believes that strength and vulnerability are not opposites. In fact, some of the most meaningful growth occurs when people allow themselves to acknowledge difficult emotions, ask for support, and engage honestly with their experiences.

His work frequently includes supporting individuals navigating:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Trauma and grief

  • Life transitions and stress

  • Relationship concerns

  • Men’s mental health

  • Parenting challenges

  • Identity exploration

  • LGBTQ+ identity and allyship

  • The emotional impact of systemic inequities and marginalization

A Collaborative Approach to Healing

Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), expressive arts, music, and culturally grounded conversations, Daunte tailors therapy to the needs of each individual.

He believes that therapy should never feel like forcing someone into a predetermined framework.

Instead, the therapeutic process should be shaped around the person sitting in the room.

Clients often describe his style as warm, collaborative, honest, and empowering. Together, therapist and client work to build greater self-awareness, strengthen coping skills, improve relationships, and create meaningful change.

Professional Background

Daunte brings nearly a decade of experience across mental health, education, nonprofit leadership, writing, and creative expression.

He earned his A.M. degree from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice at the University of Chicago and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Illinois.

His diverse professional experiences continue to inform his belief that healing happens not only within individuals, but also within relationships, communities, and systems.
